About The Masque of Blackness Reimagined

Epoh Beech’s animated film ‘The Masque of Blackness Reimagined’ (12′ 45″) (2018) reimagines and weaves together elements of Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness and Ben Jonson’s Jacobean play The Masque of Blackness. It has themes of moonlight, rivers and alchemical symbolism. The Masque of Blackness Reimagined is a piece about transformation, of darkness to light and also about healing the rivers of the world and observing their connection to the Moon.

It was created over 7 years out of thousands of charcoal drawings, the animation explores the spirit of place to take you on a journey from West Africa to the Rivers Thames in London and Rhine in Northern Germany. Our guides on the journey are a time traveling grey seal called Hermes and Pegasus the mythological winged horse.

These drawings all feature in the animation, they are varying scales, they are all drawn in charcoal on Fabriano 350gsm paper.
